What is the Jeep® 4xe Powertrain?
Jeep 4xe models are plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEV). They function similarly to regular hybrid models, employing an electric motor to alleviate the gas engine's workload, resulting in improved efficiency, smoother acceleration, and increased power output. They also charge as you drive and can operate normally using just gasoline. However, since they have larger batteries, they require external charging for optimal efficiency and performance. PHEVs offer a few notable advantages over regular hybrids, including electric-only driving capability and eligibility for a $3,750 Federal Tax Credit.
The Jeep 4xe powertrain integrates an electric motor with a 2.0-liter turbo-four engine, increasing performance to 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. An 8-speed automatic transmission sends power to all four wheels, while a dedicated battery improves fuel economy and enables electric-only driving. Jeep 4xe models can replenish their battery in 2 – 3 hours with Level 2 (240v) equipment. However, you don't necessarily need a special installation, as they can charge overnight (~10-12 hours) with a standard 120-volt household-style outlet.
